Scholarship on ontological security (OS), the of being, reveals how national narratives delineate communities within which individuals have OS and corresponding self-interest in upholding these influences foreign policy. A hereto-unexplored implication works is desire to maintain decisions balancing bandwagoning. The article uses Raymond Aron’s classical realism develop an theory balancing, drawing upon what it argues are his “early intuitions.” Specifically, using concept “secular religion,” shifts analytical focus current ideological approaches toward religion” nationalism. It bandwagoning made with reference perceived (in)compatibility between distribution power. case North Korean responses Sino-Soviet split demonstrates utility perspective compared traditional balance power formulations.
